Your Printer's Worst Enemies
How To Beat Them

There's really only two complaints we hear from printer users

  1. It's always been this way
  2. It worked fine till all of a sudden

The first category is due to having the wrong printer or installation problems. Which leaves the problems that come with age... the "all of a sudden" problems.

Most problems we see come after years of use or abuse. There are ways to beat them... and save yourself a bundle on emergency service calls. Its all a matter of how well you take care of your printer.

There are three main culprits. None will kill your printer immediately, but all will add up to trouble if you neglect these "enemies"

DUST
The number one problem with printers. Your printer works with static charges... so it attracts dust. Even the cleanest office has dust. Paper comes with it's own dust and even the largest toner particles are the size of dust. Add these together in your printer with heat and you get a microscopic muck that sticks to everything.

AIR FLOW
We've seen printers that were set up in a tight space failing within a couple of months. Watch for the vents on your printer and make sure there is several inches of space for air to flow. Also, watch where your printer is located, if you're right under an air vent, or near window and doors, your printer will act like a magnet for dust.

HEAT
The static charge doesn't make the toner permanent.. that takes a very hot roller. Your fuser assembly generate a lot of heat. That can make the dust stick even more. The rollers inside are fragile, so don't rip out paper, and make sure you don't feed a staple through the printer. Again, air flow is critical, and don't cover or move a printer that's hot. You don't want to trap heat inside.

You can get away with ignoring these "enemies" for months or years. Most printers are engineered to need very little regular attention. But in the long run, you'll do much better if you keep you printer clean.

Bear in mind the added cost of having your printer down. These "sudden" events always seem to happen when you need your printer most. Consider scheduling a service call for maintenance before the trouble happens. This can cut down on more expensive emergency repairs.

What Good Is Color?

With inkjet printers selling for the price of a good blender, we get a lot of questions about using color.

Number one question is the cost. Those cheap printer are just about disposable, the cost of ink for a couple hundred pages can easily be more than the printer itself. How do you get a affordable cost per page without investing thousands of dollars?

We have two answers... The first, short one is "PAPER"

Check the cost of colored paper.. it's more than white.. but not that much more.. and just a tiny fraction of the cost of using ink to get color. We've been using it to draw attention to our flyers for years. Internally, we use different colored paper for different forms... it's hard to get a pink form lost in a stack of green.

You've likely seen the multicolored papers available through most office supply stores. Again.. more expensive than the white or colored paper.. but far less than printing in color. You get a colorful document for a few cents that can really stand out.

Then there's the issue of whether to use an inkjet.. We say YES!

There are plenty of situations where the full color capabilities of the inkjet printers can really pay off. Photographs and other color rich documents cost you many times the price of laser printed page... but can make a presentation, proposal or picture look 1000% better. This is where the inkjet process shines.

There are very few instances where we don't recommend having BOTH a laser and an inkjet printer. The inkjet can be as inexpensive as you'd like.. just don't use if for printing your day to day output. If you print more than a ream of paper per month, and it's not a special situation where you need "all color".. we think every office should keep/obtain a laser printer. For email printouts, reports, archived documents, the toner from a laser printer will look better, last longer, and save you money.

There are several ways to use both a laser and inkjet printer on the same computer or group of computers. If you need advice on how you might set this up, or a recommendation on a new or used printer, call Landmark at 800-466-5687. Or drop us a line at sup@laserpage.com

NOTE: This article assumes that you're not quite ready to spend $2000+ for a color laser printer. But if you have the means, this the only way to go. Color lasers have more capacity, print at much lower costs per page and make great looking prints.

Please! Don't Throw That Cartridge Away

Whether you use a laser, an inkjet, or both.. you'll soon be needing to add more ink or toner. When you do, you'll be left with a "disposable" cartridge.

You could just throw this away... but please don't.

Most printer cartridges are made from plastic that will last for thousands of years. Landfills are the worst place to put used plastics. We hope you recycle whenever possible.. And with cartridges, there can be an added bonus. The cores could be worth cold hard cash!

The best value is to trade your cartridge cores for remanufactured products. There are quality firms that have been remanufacturing toner and ink cartridges for nearly 15 years (our parent company is one of them). Millions of cartridges have been processed, and you should be able to find cartridges with as good a print and even better warranty than buying from the printer manufacturer.

Even if you aren't looking to save on the cost of supplies, recycling is good for our environment and might make you a few bucks. Check how much you could be paid at
