Hewlett Packard has a new replacement for the best selling LaserJet
4050 line of printers.. the LaserJet 4100. As we discussed in the last
issue of LaserPage.
http://laserpage.com/archives/121.htm
We've had ours set up for a couple of weeks now. Here's some
interesting things we've observed:
The base machine is very much faster than the LaserJet 4050. It runs at
25 pages per minute, and has a processor that runs at 250mz (up from 133).
It has Postscript level 3 (instead of level 2) and double the base memory
(16mb) for exactly the same price as the LaserJet 4050 it replaces.
The duty cycle is 150,000 page per month (up from 65,000) so it will be
great for nearly any sized workgroup. The printer can print it's first
page in just 12 seconds (down from 15). Paper handling has not changed on
the base model.. but there are 500 sheet trays now on the two tray models.
The network card in the LaserJet 4100N is the faster 10/100 model,
getting your print job to the printer up to 10 times as fast. The printers
will also work with the cards you used in the 4000 and 4050. Network
models come with 32 megs (up from 16).
From our calculations, if you're printing full page scans, very large
bitmaps or using JetSend for photocopying.. the extra memory and network
speed will improve performance up to the rated 25ppm engine speed.

sheets, help with configuration, or a competitive price quote call us at

Don't forget to ask for the Landmark $50 certificate on LaserJet 4100
purchased by 3/31/01 from Landmark Printer Service. That brings the final
price on a Laserjet 4100 base model down to just $1049 after rebate.
Even More New LaserJet's Coming Next Month
Because we like printers that cause the least service problems, we have
a bias toward the larger "business class" laser printers.. So we
usually recommend the Laserjet 4100 or the LaserJet 8150 lines to our
clients. However, we think you should know about the alternatives.
On April 1st, Hewlett Packard will unveil 3 more new LaserJet printers.
The LaserJet 1200, 1220 and 2200.
The LaserJet 1200 replaces the LaserJet 1100. It still has the gravity
feed paper tray that causes problems for a lot of users. But at 15 pages
per minute, it's got a feature set that looks very appealing. The scanner
attachment makes it a LaserJet 1220.
The LaserJet 2200 replaces the LaserJet 2100. Again.. it's much faster
(up to 19 pages per minute), and has an appealing group of features for
the price.
Our philosophy is to place a more rugged business class printer in most
every situation. We've found that older model printers, with plenty of
life left in them, can be refurbished and offered at a fraction of their
original costs. Since they use toner instead of ink, laser printers cost
less to operate than inkjet printers and offer features that are just fine
for many home and small business users that don't need color all the time.
Regardless of your printing needs, Landmark has the LaserJet that's
right for you. Just call the printer experts.. and get free advice and
configuration information. New or refurbished, HP has something for
everyone.

What if you could use any printer in the world?
The Internet is really changing the way we do everything.. so it only
stands to reason that it will affects how we print.
There's a new protocol that being built into the latest network
printers, JetDirect cards and Windows 2000. With it, most any printers can
be shared with anyone with an Internet connection. That's right.. ANYONE!
The Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) makes it a lot easier for printers
and software from different manufacturers to communicate. Just like HTML
allows your browser to see any web page, IPP will allow you to print to
any printer.
The security is built in... so you don't have to worry about some guy
in Baghdad printing to your local printer. In fact, you pretty well have
to tell the user exactly where the printer is before they can use it...
and then they have to have the right passwords.
There are some cool tools that make setting up printers across a
company LAN or across the Internet a lot easier than before. For the past
couple of years, WebJetAdmin, free software from HP, has been doing this
for JetDirect card users. (If you have network printers and aren't using
WebJetAdmin call us for FREE help at 800-446-5687)
Other really cool software is in the works too.
Instead of printing out a document.. then walking to the fax machine to
send it to your branch office.. you'll just select a printer there to
receive the job. Soon, you'll be able to select a printer at your client's
office, or your vendor's order desk.. or use the office printer from home
without any special remote control software running. The process will be
simple.. just one extra mouse click in your FILE | PRINT dialog box.
We're beta testing a FREE solution that's coming out soon. We're hoping
to include an address in the next issue of LaserPage where you can get the
software and print a test document right at the LaserPage office!

Get more prints from every toner cartridge
You've seen this on any photocopier.. when you leave the cover open and
get a lot of extra black area. Not only is it ugly, it uses many times the
toner used when you make a "normal" copy.
So just what is a "normal" copy? (and why are we talking
about photo copiers?)
The people who make photocopiers have set the standards for how we all
measure toner use.. They say that a "normal" page is about 5%
toner coverage. Which means that 95% of the page is supposedly white.
Now we know that a black page uses 20 times as much toner as a
"normal" page. You loose 19 pages off the end of the toner life
when you "leave the cover up".
On a laser printer.. instead of a cover, a slightly different process
takes place.
When you send a print job to the printer, it's rasterized, turned into
over a million black or white dots. The laser beam hits the photo
sensitive drum in your printer and the drum is then charged to accept or
repel toner.
It sounds like a complicated, precise process.. but there are some
weird assumptions working at the same time. You see.. the toner is in very
tiny particles.. and they are not the same size as the dots charged on the
drum.
The result is that there is a lot of toner all over the page where you
thought your had blank paper. The engineers who invented this knew that
you can only see the tiny particles when there are enough of them in the
same general area. On a microscopic level there's all sorts of waste. Go
ahead, get out your microscope and see!
Okay.. maybe we'll just skip the field trip to the lab... Let's just
learn what you can do about all this
Just set your DENSITY control on your printer. Most default to a
setting that puts more toner on the page than you need. (like a
microscopic "cover" left up). You can't see it.. but it's there.
By fiddling with the density setting, you can change the amount of
charge that draws the toner to the drum and affect toner usage up to 20%.
You won't be able to see the difference.. but it's there.
There is a density setting on most laser printers. You could use the
printer for years and never see it.. but it's there. Described in your
user manual.
Our rule of thumb is to set the density dial to the lightest setting
that will still give you good prints. Remember, your printer is not a
photocopier.. there isn't varying shades of gray.. just black and no
black.. so you don't have to worry about adjusting it all the time.. just
take a few minutes.. run a couple of test prints and save, save, save.
Want to save more? Look to see if you printer has an "econo
mode". That can save up to 50% when used by turning off half the
dots. The result is sometimes an interesting effect that you may or may
not like.. but always saves on toner.
The parts used in your printer and toner cartridge are engineered to
last through a lot more than you might normally use. That's how we're able
to save you real money when you buy SuperLife toner
cartridge. We keep the outer shell, and build a custom cartridge by
replacing the just parts that make for a better print.
What? You haven't tried a SuperLife cartridge? What are
you waiting for? You can't loose with our free trial offer. We guarantee
you'll get the best looking prints you've ever printed.. and save money.
