MORE OF THE SAME.. ONLY BETTER

There's an evolution going on in laser printers. In a
few years, most laser printers will offer color, and
that all will offer superior speed and value.

In the mean time, while some manufacturers are
experimenting.. the leader is sticking to what
works. We've seen what's coming this Spring from
Hewlett Packard, and it's looks a lot like what we
have now.

The big change for HP will be the LaserJet 4100
a 25 page per minute replacement for the 17 page
per minute LaserJet 4050. As with all the other laser
printers from HP, this is an incremental change, you'll
have to look close to see the difference.

The LaserJet 4100 will definitely be the market leader
immediately, the favorite for any networked office.
While still a black only laser printer, it'll be the
right choice for most businesses. We've seen the
current state of lower priced color laser printer and
think it's a smart move.

Everyone should be looking forward to using more
color. And there are good color laser printers now.
However, the market leader for the next year or two
will be a Hewlett Packard black only Laserjet. If you'd
like to be on our Laserjet 4100 waiting list, send a
note to sales@landmarkprinters.com or call us at
800-466-5687.

DON'T LIMIT YOUR CHOICES

The new HP Laserjet 4100 doesn't ship until after
March 10. Our sources say that the toner cartridges
for this machine will be very similar to the current
line.. but will incorporate a chip that will help
users know when to order supplies.

We haven't seen it yet, so far we're assuming that
the chip is another plus for HP.. like the chips they
use in some other products. It is our understanding
that this won't force you to buy HP branded cartridges.

Other manufacturers, namely Lexmark, Toshiba and
Xerox have complex terms hidden in their legal fine
print that prevent consumer choice and raise the cost
of operation. Worst, some use chips that shut down
your printer!

Recycling is important. Even more important is your
right to choose. Make sure you check to see if your
vendor is limiting your options to find the best
values for toner and other supplies.

KEEP YOUR PRINTER CLEAN

Laser printers handle a lot of use and abuse without
problems. It doesn't take much to keep them
functioning.. a little bit of cleaning helps.

First of all, use some common sense. If your printer
is in a dusty environment cover it when not in use..
be careful about locking in heat, there are special
dust covers (call 800-466-5687) that breath.. or just
make sure the vents have some air flow.

The best thing for the paper path is paper.. if you
have smudges, especially on the back side of your
paper.. a few blank or nearly blank documents will
likely clear it up. If not, it won't hurt to try.

Then again, the worst thing for your printer is
paper.. cheap copy paper contains a lot of dust. You
can remove most of it by "fanning" the paper. Just
hold one end of the stack tight and shake it. The
less dust you run through your printer the better.

Every time you change your toner, you should run a
cleaning sheet through the printer. These cleaning
sheets are available from Landmark at 800-466-5687.

Every U.S. laser printer user that subscribes to
LaserPage is entitled to one free laser printer
cleaning kit sample from:

If you need to purchase more cleaning kits, or need to
order cleaning supplies in bulk, call 800-466-5687.

(NOTE: There were some problems with this system last
year... if you ordered a kit before January 1st, 2001
and didn't receive it, go ahead an order again. We will
send one kit to any laser printer user in the US that
hasn't had one before.)

SAVE A TREE.. SAVE HALF OFF PAPER COSTS

We don't pretend to be environmentalists.. but we do
like the idea of recycling. You know, the three R's..
Reduce, Re-use and Recycle.

While it's important to recycle your waste paper, and
maybe even cost effective to re-use some of it. The
economics on REDUCING your paper consumption is best.

Of course, we could preach about not printing what
you don't need. The savings are obvious.. what's not
so obvious is how easy it is to print MORE on a LESS
paper.

Most business class laser printers now offer a duplex
(two sided) option. Usually, it's just a plug in
accessory that anyone can slip in without tools in a
couple of minutes... so you can add it to your
existing machines.

Duplex units are recognized by Windows and other
operating systems and you can choose to use both
sides of the paper with the click of a mouse. We've
had duplex units on most of our printers for years
and find that most volume jobs are easier to read,
and take half the storage space when using duplex.

But the best cost savings comes with the drivers on
the later models of laser printers.. the option to
print 2, 4, 9 or 16 pages on one side of a sheet of
paper.

You may not want to try to read a report that has
been shrunk to 16 images on one page... that's better
for archive purposes. The text can be accessed, and
is readable (a magnifier is a good option). Just fine
if you need to look up a couple of items. A 300 page
report fits on 10 sheets of paper.

We use the 2 pages to a sheet option with the
duplexer to fit four pages on a single letter sized
page. A booklet option will help you rearrange the
page order to make instant booklets and the text is
quite readable.

If you're unsure about which features your laser
printers have.. just drop a note to our Support
Department (coach@laserpage.com ) and we'll
point you in the right direction. If you'd like
expert help in buying the right options call Landmark
